Jan Moellmann pursues the doctorate at the Chair of Corporate Sustainability to gain expertise in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship in order to better understand entrepreneurial solutions for global social and environmental challenges. Some of the most pressing of such challenges are in sub-Saharan Africa.

Focusing on micro-entrepreneurship in this region is an attempt for deeper insight into a phenomenon that is under-researched and part of the solution for a self-determined and sustainable development in the Global South generally, and sub-Saharan Africa specifically. As an external PhD student, he is simultaneously working at the sustainable start up Africa GreenTec as a director for market intelligence. This gives him a unique access to the research field in rural areas in Mali.

Current projects:

Antecedents and outcomes of micro-entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa; growth of necessity enterprises; growth aspirations of necessity entrepreneurs; impact of electricity on micro-entrepreneurship; well-being and micro-entrepreneurship
